Udaipur, also known as the city of lakes or city of romance, is located in the western state of India, Rajasthan. Fairy-tale palaces, lakes and gardens, temples and narrow lanes create a stunning environment. The placid lake Picchola mirrors an amazing and relaxed vibe.
Udaipur was once the epicentre of heroism, valour and chivalry. It was a kingdom ruled by Sisodia dynasty for more than 1200 years. So, you might be also curious to know how the thought process of a kingdom started, isn’t it? According to the legends, Maharana Udai Singh, while out hunting met a holy man meditating on a hill overlooking lake Picchola. He advised the Maharaja to build his place on that spot, where a shimmering stream flowed through a fertile valley. A very charming sight indeed with a lake, a pleasant altitude nestled in an amphitheatre of low mountains. The Maharana did as he was told and gave the world a city we know today as Udaipur. That’s how Udaipur became a kingdom and later was also known as the jewel of Mewar. Originally, there were eleven gateways but today only five exist. The Suraj Pol or the Sun Gate on the eastern side is the main entrance to the city.
