Srirangapatna has since time immemorial been an urban center and place of pilgrimage. During the Vijayanagar Empire, it became the seat of a major viceroyalty, from where several nearby vassal states of the empire, such as Mysore and Talakad, were overseen.
Hyder Ali was army commander with the Wodeyar kings after taking over the kingdom, built a big fortress around Srirangapatna. It is very strategic in nature as Srirangapatna is an island on river Cauvery. This makes the fort formidable task for any attacks.
